Description

Variety is a hallmark of this mountainside subdivision in Las Cruces’ booming Northeast location. From the efficient possibilities of a 1300+- square-foot 3 bedroom 2 bath home to a rambling 1780 square-foot plan with an optional 5th bedroom or playroom on the second story, prospective homeowners will find a Ken Thurston home that meets individual needs. There are 14 house plans to choose from and all flexibly designed for special add-on options if a buyer so desires, such as a fireplace, jet-tub garden bath, or large covered patio.

The location is equally advantageous: just off I-70 within a fifteen/twenty minute drive to the University up Telshor or downtown via Main. Golfers can zip right over for a morning’s round at one of three golf courses, including the newest – Sonoma Ranch Golf Course voted the best new course in 2000 by Golf Digest. Families with toddlers, teenagers and retirees can enjoy the many new restaurants, boutique and chain stores, and other exciting amenities being developed in this rapidly growing part of Las Cruces. And reminders of Las Cruces’ fascinating past beacon in every direction.

Think of Parkhill at the center of a giant but slightly tipsy “C” to pinpoint two worthwhile sites to visit, one requiring sturdy legs and the other a dose of curiosity and imagination. At the top of the “C”, nudged in among the craggy western slopes of the Organs is Organ Mountain Preserve. From the Visitors Center, a moderate to challenging hike takes you up to the odd stone ruins of Dripping Springs resort. In its heyday at the turn of the 20th century, this fancy “watering hole” served such notorious visitors as Pat Garrett and Pancho Villa.

Another pathway leads to La Cueva, a rudimentary cave in the cliff side which was “home” to an eccentric Italian nobleman turned hermit, until he died under mysterious circumstances, probably murder.

At the bottom of the “C”, right in the center of downtown, is the Bicentennial Log Cabin. It’s a surprising location for this simple hand-hewn structure. But this is not its original site. Built in the late 1870s in the mining community of Grafton, New Mexico, (in the Black Range Mountains northwest of Las Cruces), the cabin survived the decline of the silver and copper mines and several floods. In 1972, a hunter re-discovered the abandoned cabin and decided to donate it to the city in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial. It is furnished with antiques from the 1880s and is open by appointment for individual and group tours. During Heritage Days, the log cabin hums with frontier life again as backdrop for living history demonstrations.
